Celle, Old Town Hall, facade ornamentation (1697), mural transfer
Of the once magnificent oil painting, there remained only
isolated patches amounting to 9.2 m2 (3% of the facade surface);
although barely legible and much degraded, the intention was to
preserve them. The decision was made by the heritage protection
agency, the clients and the lead restorer Prof. Oskar Emmenegger
to detach these remains and transfer them to a new substrate for
posterity. Coherent, well-preserved portions of the picture are
now on view in the entrance hall of the Old Town Hall. The remaining
fragments are in storage at the town museum for now.
We were commissioned by the restorer Maria Ovelgönne to detach
the remaining fragments and transfer them to a new substrate. We
developed a special technique for doing so. The fragments were then
mounted in Celle by the restorer.
