Berlin, Köpenick Castle, stucco work on the Boucher ceiling
The ceiling stucco in room 3.03 was put at risk by dry rot in
the ceiling structure. This was dismantled in 1987, cut up into
70 pieces of different sizes and put into storage. The fragments
were reassembled – in the wrong order – in 2000. We carried out
an examination in the early part of 2001 and established that
parts of the stucco were in immediate need of remedial work to
prevent further deterioration.
Knöchel & Pungitore AG of Littau were contracted to dismantle
the ceiling, conserve the stucco, replace inappropriate plaster
inserts and make good missing sections. We were commissioned to
reassemble the stucco fragments in the right order and transfer
them to a new bearing structure. We developed a special technique
for doing so. Knöchel & Pungitore AG then conserved the reassembled
fragments and made good the missing sections and plaster additions
which had been removed. Once all this had been done, we collaborated
on putting the two-tonne 40 m2 ceiling back in its rightful
place in Köpenick Castle.
