Churwalden, cath. Parish church, high altar in 1477
and features
This perfectly preserved altar is one of the most
significant late Gothic winged altars in Switzerland.
Since the exposure and conservation, we have carried out
in 1971 and 1972, it shows the original version,
excellently preserved, truly a color image work on the
sculpture. Fine details such as shadow lines around the
eyes, thickly painted eyebrows, cheeks modeling, stubble
are masterfully executed. Carved beard and whiskers
continue with the finest brushes on the Inkarnatscolor.
Even more detailed and realistic is the artfully
executed version of the pain's to 1470th With expensive
azurite are bloodshot patches, shown with the cinnabar
inflamed eyelids and madder with precious drops of
blood. This perfect, well-preserved version, executed in
tempera, is an absolute rarity.
