St. Gallen, round tower (1515), stone and plaster conservation
Other than revisions to the structure in 1810 (prison) and at the
turn of the 19th century (chimney flue), the tower has never been
subjected to invasive work or restoration. This is one of those rare
examples where natural weathering under favourable circumstances is
preferable to well-meaning but highly invasive renovation work. The
round tower is therefore still in as natural a state as possible. The
job of the heritage protection agencies, client, architects and
restorers was to carry out just enough conservation work to preserve
the structure in its current historical condition. It is the only
edifice of its kind left in the region that still bears its original
plasterwork.
We were commissioned to preserve the plasterwork, dating from 1515 and 1810, in its original condition.
